13 May 2011 News

The European Union should act more unanimously in the Middle East and North Africa region, was the opinion of the Deputy Prime-minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta Tonio Borg and Minister Nickolay Mladenov, expressed at a bilateral meeting, held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

Minister Borg and Minister Mladenov discussed the progress of democratic changes in Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco as well as the necessity of the European Union, the Council of Europe and NATO to support the democratic transition in these countries with concrete measures and know-how, as well as to help them reform their legislations. In this context the two ministers highlighted the significant role of the international conference “Sofia Platform”, which took place in Bulgaria on the 5th and 6th of May.

Nickolay Mladenov and Tonio Borg shared their concern on the situation in Libya and Syria, discussed the prospects for resolving the conflicts in these two countries, as well as the refugee problem.
