14 January 2014 News

Deputy Foreign Minister Angel Velitchkov welcomed pupils-sourvakari on the occasion  " Vasilitsa " - the Roma New Year.

Pupils from “Paisiy Hilendarski” School in the city of Vurbitsa, Shumen region, greeted the leadership and the staff of the Ministry with poems and traditional songs and dances, demonstrating the relations between folklore of Roma and Bulgarians and their common hopes for a more successful and healthy year.

Deputy Foreign Minister Angel Velitchkov greeted the sourvakari and wished them to preserve the lavishness of the folk traditions of the different ethnic groups in Bulgaria. After sending wishes for health and prosperity, the pupils received gifts and sweets.

The meeting took place at the initiative of the Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance "Amalipe" that works for equal opportunities and access to quality education. The rituals associated with the holiday "Vassilitsa" are syncretism of Roma and Bulgarian rituals, showing the mutual influence between the folklore and the customs of different ethnic groups,  living in the Balkans.
