17 September 2026 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova met with Kalin Slavov, Executive Director of Transparency International Bulgaria. Kremena Chobanova, Deputy Executive Director of the organisation, also took part in the meeting. The discussion focused on the rule of law and strengthening public trust in institutions.

“The greatest challenge is to restore people’s trust in institutions and their sense that those institutions are there to serve them,” Minister Velislava Petrova said. She further noted that the new Government had received the unequivocal support of Bulgarian citizens, who expect decisive action from it to prevent and prosecute corruption, ensure a predictable business environment and provide stability in governance.

Issues such as the fight against corruption, good governance, integrity and transparency in interactions between the public and private sectors are of particular importance for strengthening stability, economic growth and public trust. “For us as an institution, it is a priority for Bulgaria to consolidate its position as a reliable ally, an attractive destination for business, investment and tourism, and a factor for regional stability. This is precisely why we are focusing on the development of economic diplomacy,” the Foreign Minister further emphasised during the discussion.

In this context, Velislava Petrova highlighted Bulgaria’s efforts to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which is a key foreign policy priority. She noted that, from the very outset of the accession process, active and consistent steps have been taken to align Bulgarian legislation, policies and practices with OECD principles and standards.

Minister Petrova thanked Transparency International Bulgaria for its commitment and active engagement, which contribute to the development of civil society.
