15 June 2026 News

On the margins of the meeting of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova held bilateral meetings with Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys and Cristina Gherasimov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.

During her meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, Minister Petrova discussed the development of bilateral relations and cooperation between Bulgaria and Lithuania within the framework of the European Union. Particular attention was devoted to preparations for Lithuania's forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will commence on 1 January 2027.

During her meeting with Cristina Gherasimov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, the two sides discussed current issues on the bilateral agenda, Moldova's European integration, and prospects for further developing economic ties between the two countries. Minister Petrova highlighted the important role of the Bulgarian community in the Republic of Moldova as a natural bridge between the two nations.

Bulgaria's top diplomat also reaffirmed Bulgaria's support for the country's European path, based on the principle of individual merit and the strict application of the established accession methodology.

During her visit to Luxembourg, Minister Velislava Petrova also represented Bulgaria at the 11th meeting of the European Union–Egypt Association Council.

In her address, she underlined Egypt's strategic importance for both the European Union and Bulgaria, noting that Egypt is Bulgaria's largest external economic partner in the region and the first Arab country with which Bulgaria established diplomatic relations.

“In 2026, we mark the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Egypt – an important anniversary that bears witness to the longstanding friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between our two countries,” Minister Petrova said.
