Minister Petrova Holds Farewell Meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia, Agneza Rusi Popovska

29 May 2026 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova held a farewell meeting today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia, Agneza Rusi Popovska, prior to her final departure from Bulgaria.

Velislava Petrova thanked Ambassador Popovska for her efforts during her tenure in Bulgaria. She expressed regret that, four years after the agreements of key importance to the European path of the Republic of North Macedonia were reached, the country has yet to proceed with their implementation. Bulgaria’s top diplomat further noted that building relations on the basis of opposition to Bulgaria has demonstrably failed to produce positive results. She expressed hope that, upon her return to Skopje, Ambassador Popovska would be able to contribute to the development of a realistic vision and a constructive approach on the part of the Government of the neighbouring country in its dialogue with Sofia, as well as to the undertaking of concrete steps towards the implementation of all elements of the 2022 European Consensus.

Minister Petrova underlined that Bulgaria is guided by its desire to further develop bilateral relations. A key prerequisite for this is the restoration of trust, which requires both parties to honour the commitments they have undertaken.
