The Bulgarian state successfully facilitated the reunification of a Bulgarian child, removed from parental care, with the child’s mother in the Kingdom of Norway

Seven years after the forced separation between a mother and her now 13-year-old daughter, the story has had a positive outcome.
This was made possible with the active assistance of the Bulgarian state, in particular through the personal involvement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Georg Georgiev, and the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Kingdom of Norway.
Thus, after seven years of forced separation, the case has had a positive outcome for the mother and daughter.
Norwegian Child Welfare Services removed the girl from her father’s parental care, a Norwegian citizen, in 2019. Since then, the child has been moved six times.
The removal took place without the mother's knowledge, at a time when the parents were divorced.
Over the years, the parents, together and separately, waged unsuccessful legal and out-of-court battles in an effort to regain custody of the child.
Since the mother sought assistance from the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Oslo in March 2025, targeted, comprehensive and all possible actions within diplomatic and consular practice have been undertaken to support the achievement of a positive resolution aimed at protecting the interests and well-being of the child.
The Bulgarian side regards the child’s final return to the mother as a victory for justice and as an expression of the Norwegian side’s commitment to the universal principles of the rule of law and humanism, respect for human rights, and the pursuit of ensuring the well-being of every child.
