We commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

27 January 2026 News

Today, 27 January, we commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and pay tribute to the millions of victims who perished during one of the darkest periods in human history, the lessons of which remain relevant to this day.

Paying tribute to the victims obliges us not only to remember, but also to act – to stand against hatred, intolerance and discrimination in all their forms. Antisemitism continues to be a threat today. Therefore, Bulgaria consistently and categorically condemns all its manifestations and works actively to prevent them.

History reminds us that even in the darkest moments, humanity can prevail. The rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during World War II remains a vivid example of moral courage and solidarity – an example that still inspires our efforts to protect human rights and human dignity.

Bulgaria will continue to be an active participant in international initiatives to combat antisemitism, hate speech and all forms of xenophobia. Our country remains firmly committed to building a world in which crimes such as the Holocaust will never be possible again.

The Diplomatic Institute under the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Hebrew Studies Programme at the Faculty of History of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, organized a commemorative ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister Nikolay Berievski, who lit a memorial candle dedicated to the Righteous Among the Nations - those who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
