27 November 2025 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, held a meeting with the ambassadors of the European Union Member States accredited to Bulgaria. The meeting, hosted at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Sofia, was organised within the framework of Denmark’s current Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Central to the discussion were key issues on the current European agenda. Minister Georgiev placed particular emphasis on support for Ukraine, the EU’s enlargement policy, and security in the Black Sea region. “Bulgaria welcomes the continued efforts of the United States and President Trump to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The plan presented by the United States provides a solid basis for further work towards a sustainable resolution of the conflict,” the Minister stated. He underscored that EU unity is of paramount importance, as any future peace agreement would directly affect Bulgaria, the European Union, and the security of the entire continent.

Minister Georgiev highlighted that the EU enlargement policy remains one of Bulgaria’s leading priorities. He congratulated Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine and Moldova on the progress achieved and on their sustained reform efforts, stressing the need for all candidate countries to fulfil the commitments they have undertaken towards the EU. “The principle of merit-based assessment remains fundamental to progress in the accession process,” the Foreign Minister noted.

In this context, Minister Georgiev underlined the importance of maintaining unanimity in decision-making within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, as well as in the enlargement process. “EU unity is more necessary today than ever,” he emphasised.

The Minister also highlighted the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for the security of the EU and Europe as a whole. He stressed that a stable and predictable environment in the Black Sea enhances the resilience and connectivity of the region with the Western Balkans, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. “A significant step in this direction is the adoption of the EU’s strategic approach to the Black Sea, initiated by Bulgaria and Romania and supported by a broad range of Member States,” the Minister stated. He added that Bulgaria is actively working towards the implementation of concrete projects in the fields of security, connectivity and resilience in the Black Sea region.

During the discussion, views were also exchanged on other important international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East and the EU’s approach towards China.
