26 November 2025 News

On 24–25 November, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Berievski took part in the Seventh European Union – African Union Summit, dedicated to the theme “Promoting Peace and Prosperity through Effective Multilateralism.” The summit was held in the Angolan capital, Luanda, under the joint hosting of the rotating Chair of the African Union, President of Angola João Lourenço, and the President of the European Council, António Costa. Also in attendance were President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President of France Emmanuel Macron, Federal Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, the Prime Ministers of Italy Giorgia Meloni, Spain Pedro Sanchez, the Netherlands Dick Schoof, Denmark Mette Frederiksen, Poland Donald Tusk, as well as other leaders, ministers and deputy foreign ministers.

Deputy Minister Berievski contributed to the discussion on the theme “People – Migration and Mobility.” In his statement, he expressed strong support for deepening the EU’s relations with its African partners and emphasised the need for close cooperation in tackling instability, terrorism and irregular migration. He welcomed the expansion of legal pathways for African workers to access the European labour market, while stressing the importance of circular migration and policies that encourage the return of acquired skills and knowledge to local communities, thereby mitigating the negative effects that mobility policies may have on countries of origin. He also underlined the potential of youth mobility to strengthen the partnership.

The summit marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the EU – AU partnership and coincided with the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, concluding with the adoption of a Joint Declaration.

During his visit to Angola, Deputy Minister Berievski held bilateral meetings with the Minister of International Affairs of Botswana, Penyo Butale, and the Secretary of State for External Relations of Angola, Esmeralda Mendonça. The discussions highlighted a shared willingness to revive political dialogue and deepen sectoral cooperation, particularly in the fields of agriculture, the economy, defence and education.

While in Luanda, Deputy Minister Berievski also met with representatives of the Bulgarian community and the association of Angolan citizens who completed their studies in Bulgaria.
