The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, met today in Sofia with the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Johann Wadephul, who is in the country at the invitation of the Bulgarian side. The talks were held in a spirit of strategic partnership and shared priorities in the fields of security and European integration.
“The fact that we are united around the enlargement of the Western Balkans and a number of other key topics, among which the war in Ukraine, demonstrates the deep trust that exists between our countries,” the Bulgarian Foreign Minister said during the meeting. Minister Georgiev assured his guest that Germany is a key strategic partner of Bulgaria and that the two countries share a common vision for a stronger, united, and capable Europe.
During the meeting, the importance was emphasised of maintaining a regular political dialogue and deepening cooperation in key sectors – defence, energy, infrastructure, innovation, and scientific research.
A special emphasis was placed on the “European Sky Shield” initiative, as well as on the partnership with the German company Rheinmetall to build production capacities in Bulgaria for ammunition and gunpowder. “This is a concrete example of how Bulgaria and Germany together can contribute to strengthening European defence by investing in real capabilities and the strategic autonomy of the EU,” Minister Georg Georgiev stated.
“Bulgaria is a reliable partner and ally. Today’s conversation has confirmed our joint commitment to Europe’s security – from the Black Sea to the Western Balkans and beyond.
We are particularly pleased that the Bulgarian Government has decided to strengthen our cooperation in the field of defence. Thank you for the excellent conditions that you are creating for this partnership,” stated the German Foreign Minister.
The two Ministers also discussed EU Enlargement and Institutional Reforms. The Bulgarian side reiterated its firm support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova, but stressed that the process must remain merit-based and founded on established criteria.
The two sides also discussed Security in the Black Sea Region, Support for Ukraine, and the forthcoming Multiannual Financial Framework of the EU.
Minister Georgiev and his German colleague confirmed their commitment to strengthening the Strategic Partnership Between Bulgaria and Germany and to enhancing cooperation within the frameworks of the EU and NATO in defence of peace, stability, and democratic values.
