Minister Georg Georgiev and Ljupcho Georgievski Meet with Ambassadors and Diplomats from EU Member States, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Switzerland
04 July 2025 NewsThe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georg Georgiev, held a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with ambassadors and diplomats from the embassies of EU Member States, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland accredited to Bulgaria.
The foreign diplomats were briefed in detail on the growing trend of institutional repression against the Bulgarian community in the Republic of North Macedonia. In this context, an open and candid discussion was held with Mr Ljupcho Georgievski, Chair of the “Ivan Mihaylov Cultural Club” in Bitola, which was shut down by the authorities in Skopje.
Minister Georgiev reaffirmed the Bulgarian state's consistent support for Mr Georgievski and emphasised Bulgaria’s firm position that the guilty verdict handed down against him on 12 June this year by the Basic Court in Bitola is wholly unacceptable. Bulgaria considers the case and conviction of Mr Georgievski to be a politically motivated process, incompatible with the standards expected of a country aspiring to join the European Union and claiming to be a functioning democracy.
Bulgarian institutions remain firmly committed to safeguarding the rights of Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia, including through the use of all available international human rights mechanisms.
