Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

23 June 2025 News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the barbaric attack on the Orthodox Church “St Elijah” in the suburbs of Damascus, carried out on 22 June 2025. The attack claimed the lives of dozens of innocent worshippers, including children, and left many others injured. This terrorist act constitutes a direct assault on religious freedom and on the security of the Christian community in Syria and the wider region.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and we wish a swift and full recovery to all those injured and affected.

We urge the interim Syrian authorities and the international community to take immediate action to bring those responsible for this heinous crime to justice, and to ensure the safety of all religious minorities in the country.

Bulgaria supports the efforts of the European Union to strengthen coordinated measures against all forms of religious violence and extremism that seek to undermine peace and interfaith relations in the region.
