Deputy Minister Shekerletova Meets with Mr Lou Qinjian, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress, Spokesman and Member of the Standing Committee of the Assembly, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On 21 May, Deputy Minister Elena Shekerletova held a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Mr Lou Qinjian, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress (the Chinese Parliament), Spokesman and Member of the Standing Committee of the Congress.

During the meeting, both parties expressed satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations and affirmed their readiness to further strengthen them. Deputy Minister Shekerletova noted that Bulgaria places high value on its traditional partnership with China is committed to fostering pragmatic and reciprocal relations that reflect our national priorities.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Discussions included the prospects for bilateral dialogue, trade relations, educational and cultural exchange, and tourism. Deputy Minister Shekerletova outlined the opportunities to further enhance mutually beneficial economic ties – both through facilitating access for traditional Bulgarian products to the vast Chinese market and by focusing on emerging areas of cooperation such as innovation, artificial intelligence, and technology. The conversation also highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections in building and sustaining mutual understanding and dialogue.

The two sides discussed cooperation in multilateral formats and exchanged views on current international issues. Emphasising the responsibility of states on the global stage, the Bulgarian side voiced deep concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine and the growing number of conflict zones worldwide, which are destabilising and undermining the foundations of the rules-based international order. Shared values of peace and the common goals of creating a stable environment for sustainable development and growth were reaffirmed.
