The violence in Syria must stop immediately

16 May 2013 News

Statement by the Foreign Ministry spokesperson

Bulgaria is a co-sponsor of the resolution adopted yesterday by the UN General Assembly in regard to the deepening crisis in Syria. This clear appeal by the world organization sends a firm message to the regime of President Assad to embark on dialogue and a process of political transition and to immediately stop violence against his own people.

The conflict in Syria daily leads to the deaths of hundreds of people, including many women, children and elderly people, which is unacceptable and reprehensible.

The serious situation in Syria threatens security and stability in the region and leads to immense suffering for millions of people. Bulgaria welcomes the joint initiative by United States Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to organize an international conference to create the conditions for a political transition in Syria. This initiative can consolidate and expedite resolution of the crisis in the Arab country.
