Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the anti-Semitic incident in Kardzhali
16 January 2025 News
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria firmly condemns the vandalism against the memorial sign marking the place where the synagogue in Kardzhali was situated in the period 1924—1956. This intolerable act is in clear contradiction with the spirit of tolerance and harmonious coexistence for which the beautiful Rhodope town of Kardzhali is famous — home to citizens of different nationalities and faiths, united by their belonging to their common homeland — the Republic of Bulgaria.
Such acts of aggression are alien to the traditions of our people and in no way reflect the aspirations of the vast majority to live together in peace and understanding, regardless of one's ethnic or religious affiliation.
We call on the competent law enforcement authorities to take all necessary and legally permissible measures to identify the perpetrators of this shameful act and to bring them to justice.
