05 December 2024 News

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Maria Angelieva, participated in the Ministerial Conference "A Year on the Humanitarian Catastrophe in Gaza: Urgent Needs, Lasting Solutions" held in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, on 2 December 2024.

The conference was held under the auspices of the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and focused on the provision of humanitarian assistance and early recovery efforts in Gaza. Delegations from more than 90 countries, international and non-governmental organizations participated in the event. Dr. Muhammad Mustafa, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine, Philip Lazarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Sigrid Kaag, Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, and others made opening remarks.

In her speech Deputy Minister Angelieva stressed that Bulgaria remains committed to the international efforts to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The financial contribution of the Republic of Bulgaria to the work of the World Health Organization, the Egyptian Red Crescent and the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organization was pointed out. The Bulgarian side's readiness to provide additional humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilians through a voluntary contribution to the World Health Organization by the end of the year was also highlighted, as additional financial contributions to humanitarian organizations working in Gaza are foreseen for 2025.

Deputy Minister Angelieva drew attention to the fact that humanitarian aid should be seen only as a means of emergency assistance and not as a sustainable solution to the issue. In this sense, Bulgaria remains actively committed to promoting all international initiatives and efforts that lead to the establishment of lasting peace, security and stability in the region.

In the concluding part of her statement, Deputy Minister Angelieva expressed the principled and consistently followed position of the Bulgarian side, that a just and lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through negotiations leading to the establishment of an independent and democratic Palestinian State living in peace, security and mutual recognition with the State of Israel.
