Ivan Kondov: Bulgaria plays key role in improving regional cooperation, energy security, transport connectivity

17 October 2024 News

‘To date, Bulgaria has played a key role in improving regional cooperation, energy security, transport connectivity and the development of critical infrastructure, as well as successfully controlling one of the EU’s most sensitive external borders, thus contributing to the security of Europe as a whole.’ This is what Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov said at the opening of the international conference ‘Bulgaria’s membership in the EU: 17 years later’, which was held today at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE). The focus of the event was the results achieved by Bulgaria's membership in the European Union in the past years.

In his address to the students, the first Bulgarian diplomat highlighted the achievements of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2018. ‘Our presidency was a key moment when we advocated for the integration of the Western Balkan countries into the EU. Enlargement policy remains a key priority for Bulgaria as we are well aware from our own experience of its transforming potential’, he pointed out. Minister Kondov added that Bulgaria remains committed to providing support in the EU accession process on the principle of the Western Balkan countries' own merits. He also expressed hope that our country will join the euro area on 1 January 2026.
