On 17 September 2024, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Elena Shekerletova, received copies of the credentials of the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Sofia, H. E. Mr Esen Aydogdiev.

Deputy Minister Shekerletova stressed the importance for the Bulgarian side of friendly and constructive relations and cooperation with Turkmenistan as an important partner for Bulgaria in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region, both bilaterally and in the light of the EU Strategy for Central Asia adopted in 2019 and the EU policy of enhanced cooperation and partnership with the Central Asian countries, given the ongoing processes there as a result of the serious geopolitical and economic changes in the world.

During the meeting, the two sides confirmed their desire to intensify and expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation, as well as for fruitful interaction in other areas of mutual interest.

Bulgaria is interested in intensifying its bilateral relations with Turkmenistan with a focus on energy and energy diversification, as well as in joint projects to build energy and transport infrastructure in the context of Europe-Asia connectivity.

Issues related to current developments in the international situation, challenges to global stability and peace and other topics on the international agenda were also discussed.
