The European Council granted Montenegro the status of candidate country for EU membership

Statement by the MFA’s Spokesperson
We welcome the decision of the European Council, which gives Montenegro a status of a country, candidate for an EU membership. This is an important step for the European integration process for the country.
Obtaining this status is recognition that the successive democratic reforms are the only path for European integration.
This is a clear signal to the entire region that the progress of the candidate countries is directly linked to their individual efforts and successes.
We are confident that the Government of Montenegro will continue to fulfill the criteria set by the European Commission’s key priorities in order to start the negotiations for their membership.
Bulgaria will continue to support the European integration processes of Montenegro and the entire region of the Western Balkans.
