27 March 2024 News

On 27 March 2024, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Commonwealth of Australia, Encho Dimitrov, presented his credentials to the Governor-General of Australia, David Hurley.

During the meeting with Governor General Hurley, which followed the presentation of the credentials, Ambassador Dimitrov expressed his readiness to contribute to the development of the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries by working to deepen political relations, increase trade and investment, stimulate exchanges in science and education, strengthen cooperation in the field of new technologies and innovation, increase mutual understanding and strengthen contacts between the people of the two countries. He noted the active Bulgarian community, which contributes to the development of Australia and successfully fits into the multicultural diversity of the Australian nation, but also maintains its ties with Bulgaria, has its societies, folklore groups and Sunday schools.

The talks highlighted the unanimity of the two sides on many current international issues, as well as the importance of the development of the European Union's relations with Australia.

Ambassador Dimitrov noted with gratitude Australia's support for our country's membership in the OECD. He highlighted Bulgaria's readiness to start work on the negotiation of a double taxation agreement with Australia, as well as Bulgaria's willingness to conclude a social security agreement with Australia.

The meeting was also attended by Mr Craig McLachlan, Deputy Secretary for International Security in Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Official Secretary to the Governor-General.

The presentation of credentials was followed by the traditional "Welcome to Country" ceremony for newly appointed Ambassadors by Indigenous Australians and a working lunch given by Governor-General Hurley.
