Mariya Gabriel: With coordinated action and joint efforts, the issue of cardiovascular health can be high on the European and national agenda

28 March 2024 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel hosted the conference ‘Cardiovascular Health in Europe: Challenges and Prospects’ in partnership with H.E. Ambassador Frédéric Meurice and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Bulgaria. The event is organized with the support of the European Society of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiologists in Bulgaria. Among the participants in the conference were the Minister for Health Prof. Dr. Hristo Hinkov and the Ambassador of Hungary H.E. Miklós Boros.

The aim of the forum was to bring together health experts at national and European level, representatives of EU institutions, scientists and academics to discuss putting cardiovascular health at the centre of the European discourse. The conference focused on two main themes — strengthening the EU social and health agenda and cardiovascular health in Bulgaria.

‘Medicine has made significant progress in recent decades, yet cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide and the number one cause of death in the EU. The scale of the challenges is undeniable, but within these challenges lie opportunities for innovative progress. It is important to outline together key priorities with the overarching goal of a National Cardiovascular Disease Plan with a strategy and action plan to benefit citizens, Bulgaria and the EU. With coordinated action and united efforts we can contribute to a stronger and stronger European Union’, said Mariya Gabriel.

The Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU has set the strengthening of the EU’s social and health agenda among its six priorities for January—June 2024. The aim is to engage more European policy makers and health professionals in the development of cardiovascular health.

‘When we address cardiovascular health issues, we address public health issues. It goes through treatment, prevention, innovation, education and cooperation at national and European level. Let us work together to ensure that the issue of cardiovascular health is high on the European and national agenda and is filled with concrete actions’, Mariya Gabriel concluded.
