Mariya Gabriel: Foreign policy strategy is a bridge for communication with the world around us

29 February 2024 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel hosted the conference ‘Multipolar World and Foreign Policy Strategy: challenges and perspective for Bulgaria’. This is the third conference on the foreign policy strategy that Mariya Gabriel organised for the preparation of the strategic document.

Participants in the conference were the Secretary General of the European External Action Service Stefano Sannino, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria (2012 — 2017) Rosen Plevneliev, the Chair of Sofia Security Forum Yordan Bozhilov, the UNICEF representative in Bulgaria Christina de Bruin, the Chief Advisor to the Director General of DG Energy at the European Commission Tudor Constantinescu, the President of the Association of the Honorary Consuls in Bulgaria Borislav Boyanov, and the Technical Director of the Dronamix company Konstantin Rangelov.

‘Humanity is entering a critical decade marked by increasing competition, rivalry and attempts to challenge and revise the international legal order based on the UN Charter. The Bulgarian government, state institutions, political and civic leaders can unite in our common responsibility to do more and better to safeguard democracy, freedom, human rights, peace and security. Together with allies and partners, Bulgaria needs a clear national position in violating international law, respecting human values and ensuring a sustainable future for young generations. The foreign policy strategy will express Bulgaria's fundamental values, principles and norms defining the priorities and objectives in our international relations’, Mariya Gabriel said.

A wide range of diplomats, experts, academics, NGOs and young people are involved in the preparation of the strategy. The aim is to create a consolidated document that allows flexibility and adaptation to the changing environment, contributes to more cohesion and continuity in Bulgaria's international behaviour in line with national interests. The document will also underline Bulgaria's position on the international scene, pointing out Bulgaria's contribution to peace, security and cooperation at regional, European and global level.

‘Foreign policy strategy is a bridge to communicate with the world around us so that we can better address challenges, side by side with our allies and partners. A foreign policy strategy, which sets priorities and identifies principles and objectives, is a necessary and useful tool for both policymakers and society. It is important for us to speak with one voice at home and abroad and to ensure better protection of our country's interests,’ Mariya Gabriel concluded.
