Foreign Ministry’s draft Consular Assistance Bill is open for public consultation

14 February 2013 News

The draft of the law proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on consular assistance and consular services has reached the next stage of the procedure for adoption. It has been posted for public consultation at the web address http://www.strategy.bg.

Everyone will be able to submit comments, suggestions and proposals on the draft for a new mechanism for consular assistance and services rendered by the Bulgarian state to Bulgarian citizens, Bulgarian juristic persons and citizens of EU member states abroad until February 28 2013.

The goal of the proposed bill is maximum clarity on the written commitments of the state as well as what citizens may expect and require. During this time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also will hold meetings with groups that have an interest in the project, such as civic organisations, business associations and others.

The draft bill on consular assistance and consular services is a further step by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aimed at addressing the need for a new type of treatment for Bulgarian citizens abroad.

At the end of 2012, the Foreign Ministry started the service “I am travelling to…” to make matters easier for citizens in their travels abroad.
