US Congress Resolution Highlights Support for Investigation of Burgas Terrorist Attack

Commenting on the US Congress Resolution, approved on January 1st, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nickolay E. Mladenov stated: "The resolution demonstrates once again our joint commitment to international peace and security. Bulgaria highly appreciates the unconditional support and assistance that the US has provided in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in the summer of last year”. 

While reiterating that the investigation is still ongoing, the Minister said “there is no doubt that the Bulgarian authorities will spare no efforts to bring it to a successful end and hold the perpetrators of this brutal act accountable". He further noted that "passing the Resolution represents another significant step in the Bulgaria-US strategic partnership. Bulgaria deeply values the US resolve to support its authorities in the investigation. We are allies in NATO, our partnership is strong because it is based on shared values." 

The Resolution urges the President of the United States to provide all necessary diplomatic, intelligence, and law enforcement support to the Government of Bulgaria to investigate the July 18, 2012, terrorist attack. It urges the United States, NATO, and the European Union to work with Bulgaria to safeguard its territory and citizens from the threat of terrorism.

"I welcome the fact that Congress has reaffirmed US support for Bulgaria. We look forward to expanding our cooperation in all areas of interest to both nations — education, research and development, security, justice, etc. ", Mladenov said.
