We mark World AIDS Day

01 December 2021 News

Today we mark December 1 - World AIDS Day, which this year is held under the title "Stop inequalities. Let's stop AIDS. Let's stop the pandemics."

The HIV / AIDS pandemic has been a major global health and social problem for more than four decades. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the epidemic has so far claimed the lives of about 36 million people, and by the end of 2020, nearly 38 million people in the world live with HIV. AIDS is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus - HIV. Modern HIV therapy, also available in Bulgaria, allows people living with the virus to avoid AIDS and have a relatively normal lifestyle, but measures to prevent the spread of the HIV virus remain crucial in tackling the pandemic. This means that each of us can contribute, in the name of our own health and the health of our loved ones, to tackling the HIV / AIDS pandemic, while respecting prevention measures that have been shown to be effective.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports international efforts to tackle the HIV / AIDS pandemic and supports the UN Program on HIV / AIDS, which aims to drastically reduce new HIV cases and achieve zero discrimination against people living with the virus.

In 2021, Bulgaria adopted the National Program for Prevention and Control of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections for the period 2021 - 2025, which introduces in our country the innovative methods of prevention recommended by the WHO and the European Centre for Disease Control.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its sympathy with all people around the world who are affected by HIV / AIDS.
