The "Bulgarian letters" have returned to our country - in the park of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

01 November 2021 News

The Bulgarian Letters art installation with benches in the form of letters, has returned to Bulgaria, as five of the exhibits have already been exhibited at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the Day of the National Enlighteners. The letters "Ж" (zh), "З" (z), "Ч" (ch)" and "Я" (ya) greet visitors in the garden of the ministry, and a bench in the form of the letter "D" decorates the yard of the State Cultural Institute.

The exhibits are a donation from the Read Sofia Foundation, which in 2018 created the art installation, including original benches in the shape of the letters unique to the Cyrillic alphabet, each of which is related to a poem by a Bulgarian contemporary poet.

Since 2019, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the benches have toured many European cities, first adorning the banks of the River Seine in Paris and then one of the busiest places on the banks of the River Spree in Berlin. They also visited the German city of Münster, as well as Brussels, Ghent and Budapest. In more distant destinations such as Rabat and Edinburgh, new letters were made based on the authors' sketches.

On the Day of the National Enlighteners, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will congratulate our compatriots with a special three-dimensional projection on the facade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which can be seen in the dark hours of November 1-2, 2021. The luminous  project is an expression of respect for the eternal work of the Bulgarian educators, writers and revolutionaries..

An exposition from the Balkan Heritage series, donated by its author, the photographer Ivo Hadzhimishev, has been arranged in the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the holiday. It is part of the CRD Balkan Dialogue platform, which aims to enhance cultural exchange between Bulgaria and the countries of the Western Balkans.
