Bulgaria was elected member of the Postal Operations Council of the Universal Postal Union

30 August 2021 News

Bulgaria was elected member of the Postal Operations Council of the Universal Postal Union – one of the two main governing bodies of the organization. The elections were carried out on August 26, 2021 within the 27th Universal Postal Union Congress in Abidjan, the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (August 9-27, 2021).

Of the 156 member states participating in the secret ballot, 136 supported the Bulgarian candidacy, which was the highest result in our regional group.

The Universal Postal Union is one of the oldest international organizations. It was established in 1874 and as of 1948 has the status of an intergovernmental agency within the United Nations System, specializing in the field of postal services. Bulgaria is one of the first countries in the world to join the organization – in 1879.

The success of the Bulgarian candidacy is a high recognition for the active participation of our country in the Universal Postal Union’s activities. The membership in the Council is carried out through Bulgarian Posts EAD and will enable our country to participate directly in the management of the organization on all issues related to the operation of postal services.
