Bulgaria condemns the instances of hate speech in the Republic of North Macedonia and the latest provocations against good neighbourly relations

02 July 2021 News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the public statements made by Dragan Gyurovski, member of the Youth Union of VMRO-DPMNE, in which he raised offensive false claims and attributed rude qualifications to Bulgaria and its people, meant to incite hatred.

Such provocations are at odds with all basic European principles and norms of political behaviour. They are symptomatic of stereotypes inherited from the past, which go against the declared desire by the Republic of North Macedonia and its society to share our European values and to join our European family.

Bulgaria has always acted in continuity, transparency and constructiveness in its relations with neighbours. Despite of all the gestures of good neighbourliness, Bulgaria is being demonized and subjected to hate speech in the internal political debate in the Rеpublic of North Macedonia. This is unacceptable in our contemporary world.

We note with concern that these provocations occur, once again, at a time when Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia are in search of constructive dialogue and mutually acceptable solutions. Such instances certainly do not contribute to building good neighbourly relations. They further impede the restoration of confidence and the achievement of progress in our bilateral dialogue, which would be of immediate interest to people from both sides of the border.

Bulgaria expects that the government of the Republic of North Macedonia most categorically distance itself from the dangerous provocations at hand and undertake the necessary actions to implement in practice its long reiterated commitments to counter cases of public hate speech against Bulgaria.
