Deputy Prime Minister Zaharieva Participates in Ministerial Meeting of Global Media Freedom Coalition

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva took part in the ministerial meeting of the states members of the Global Media Freedom Coalition and in her address called for the adoption of a joint approach not only to identifying, but also to exposing and averting all attempts at spreading disinformation.
Canada and Botswana co-chaired the video conference. Some 32 delegations at minister level made statements.
„All states should build legal instruments to guarantee freedom of speech. Today, the media are working under pressure not only from fake news but also from various regimes that limit access to information, for the purpose of which they use artificial intelligence,“ Zaharieva said. She referred to the coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic saying that it is important for governments to provide transparent and timely information to the public.
The Bulgarian top diplomat reiterated the government’s determination to bring to justice all perpetrators of crimes against journalists and to apply all standards of protecting freedom of speech.
The Global Media Freedom Coalition was established in London in July 2019 and Bulgaria has been a member of it from its very beginning. The Coalition has 37 members now who are determined to fight against all attacks on journalists performing their duties.
