Bulgaria and Croatia discuss deepening of cooperation during political consultations at the MFA

30 September 2020 News

The excellent cooperation between Bulgaria and Croatia was confirmed at the first political consultations held at deputy ministerial level at the MFA.

Mr. Petko Doykov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs led the consultations on the Bulgarian side and Ms. Andreja Metelko-Zgombić, State Secretary for Europe at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs led the consultations on the Croatian side.

The two parties expressed their confidence that the traditional friendship and the relations as EU Member States and NATO Allies were a prerequisite for building a strategic partnership between the two countries. The delegations discussed the actions undertaken at the national, regional and European level in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and the excellent cooperation between the two countries in that difficult situation.

„We highly appreciate Croatia’s achievements during its Presidency of the EU Council at times of unprecedented challenges related to the coronavirus and its efforts with regard to the European integration of the countries in the Western Balkans“, said Mr. Petko Doykov. He underlined that Bulgaria was a consistent supporter of the European path of those six countries as a guarantee for the stability and prosperity of the region. Being a co-chair of the Berlin Process, together with the Republic of North Macedonia, Bulgaria continues to work along these lines, expecting concrete results from the Sofia Summit in November. Ms. Andreja Metelko-Zgombić thanked the Bulgarian Government for the support after the earthquake in Zagreb last March and the Ambassador of Croatia to Sofia Ms. Jasna Ognjanovac expressed special gratitude to the MFA and Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva for the assistance provided to the Embassy during the pandemic.

There were discussions within the framework of the political consultations on the opportunities for deepening the cooperation in spheres such as energy, information technologies, chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, and infrastructure projects. The discussions highlighted the key role of Corridor 8 for the improved connectivity of the region and the opening of a direct flight  between Sofia and Zagreb.
