Deputy Minister Lyutskanov Opens a Session of the OECD Interdepartmental Coordination Mechanism

02 July 2020 News

The Interdepartmental Coordination Mechanism for preparing Bulgaria to join the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD) has discussed the state of play as regards preparations.

The Interdepartmental Coordination Mechanism convened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today for its first session for the year. Deputy ministers and representatives of several institutions and agencies directly engaged in the country’s preparations in various spheres took part in the meeting.

“Thank you for responding to the invitation to the first session for this year. We considered it important to meet and discuss the state of play as regards our preparations for joining the OECD. We were successful in creating a good foundation and a framework for our work on joining this global economic organization. We are consistently building on these foundations and stepping up our efforts,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Milen Lyutskanov said in his opening remarks.

Participants discussed the draft Action Roadmap for the 2021-2023 period and the preparations for joining the OECD, including the allocation of financial resources for this period. The goal is to synchronize the presentation of the structure and logic of the Action Plan, which succeeds the one that was developed jointly with the OECD in 2019. The actions envisaged concern cooperation with the OECD in more than 20 key areas.

Matters relevant to the next steps towards Bulgaria’s accession to the OECD’s Committee on Digital Economy Policy and on meeting some of the organization’s recommendations in this field also received discussion.

Deputy Minister Lyutskanov was positive that, in view of the state of play of Bulgaria’s preparations for joining the OECD in recent years, a foreign policy priority that Bulgaria has been consistently working on, Bulgaria expects to receive an invitation to begin negotiations and hopes that this would happen in the shortest time possible.

Deputy Minister Lyutskanov thanked the attending officials for the excellent cooperation and the active efforts of all departments concerned, as a result of which Bulgaria has achieved progress in important areas. In particular, he pointed out Bulgaria’s upcoming accession to the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency and the advanced stage in the accession to the Liberalization Codes and the OECD’s ongoing reviews of Bulgaria (the economic and investment ones).
