Bulgaria Elected Member of the UN Economic and Social Council

Bulgaria was elected member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2021-2023 period.
Bulgaria’s candidacy was supported by 186 of a total of 192 countries that were represented and voted by secret ballot at the 74th UN General Assembly session on 17 June. Seventeen other countries were elected members of the ECOSOC together with Bulgaria: France, Germany, Portugal, Austria, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Japan, the Solomon Islands, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
The ECOSOC is one of the UN’s six principal bodies. Representatives of 54 countries sit on it. The Council is responsible for coordination, political dialogue and recommendations on economic, political and social matters related to the environment.
Bulgaria values highly the ECOSOC’s role as a principal UN platform for the exchange of views, debates and innovative thinking on the issues of sustainable development. As a member, Bulgaria intends to work for the optimization of the ECOSOC’s work, for the implementation of sustainable solutions and for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Bulgaria’s mandate will begin on 1 January 2021, which will mark the start of Bulgaria’s ninth membership in the ECOSOC since 1955.
