Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Kyrgyz Republic were held at the level of Deputy Ministers on 29 May via videoconferencing. Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Petko Doykov held the consultations on the Bulgarian side, while Azizbek Madmarov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, represented the Kyrgyz side.

The participants in the talks discussed various aspects of the bilateral cooperation between Bulgaria and the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as the relations between the EU and Kyrgyzstan. “We consider the Kyrgyz Republic a friendly country and congratulate you on the progress in its development. We support the signing of an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Kyrgyzstan,” Deputy Minister Petko Doykov said. The Agreement between the EU and Kyrgyzstan was signed in Bishkek on 6 July 2019.

The strengthening of the two states’ political dialogue and their economic cooperation featured prominently among the bilateral cooperation topics. “We are pleased with Kyrgyzstan’s decision to accredit an Ambassador to Bulgaria, as this is important for the development of the bilateral relations,” Deputy Minister Petko Doykov said. He also announced that the Bulgarian side has initiated a procedure for the appointment of a Bulgarian Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan.

The participants in the talks also discussed the possibility of exchanging visits by the two countries’ Ministers of Foreign Affairs, as well as the invitation to Ekaterina Zaharieva, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to take part in the First Economic Forum EU-Central Asia that would be hosted by Bishkek.

“We would like to enhance the trade links between us and to set up joint companies between Kyrgyzstan and Bulgaria. We would like to use Bulgaria as a transit country that would provide to Kyrgyzstan a path to the EU market,” Azizbek Madmarov said. According to data provided by the Kyrgyz side, the trade exchange with Bulgaria amounted to $18 million in 2019. Azizbek Madmarov said that the Kyrgyz side has drafted a list of proposals in the sphere of trade, economic, and investment cooperation that would be forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Kyrgyz Embassy.

The consultations also included discussions on cooperation on consular issues, the mutual support of candidacies in international organizations, as well as cooperation in the spheres of culture and education, youth, and sports.
