A year from the tragic accident in Lake Ohrid

A memorial service will be held in the Macedonian town of Ohrid on Sunday to remember the 15 Bulgarian nationals who died in the tragic incident in Lake Ohrid on 5 September 2009.

It will be attended by relatives of the deceased as well as by representatives of the Bulgarian and local authorities, citizens who helped rescue the injured Bulgarians, members of the Ohrid-based initiative committee September 5.

A year ago the tragedy with the Bulgarian citizens united the efforts of the Bulgarian and Macedonian authorities in identifying the reasons for the incident and handling the hard effects for the survivors. Many Macedonian citizens risked their lives to rescue the Bulgarians.

On 6 May 2010 Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov conferred awards on the Macedonians who participated in the rescue operation.
