Ekaterina Zaharieva Stresses Role of Honorary Consuls for Promotion of State-to-State Relations

13 June 2019 News

“Honorary consuls are playing an ever more important role in state-to-state relations,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva emphasised. She was a guest at a formal dinner in Sofia hosted by the World Federation of Consuls (FICAC) and the Association of the Honorary Consuls in Bulgaria.

In her welcoming speech, Zaharieva outlined the significance of honorary consuls for economic relations and personal contacts.

“If there are strong trade, economic and cultural ties, as well as strong people-to-people contacts, relations between countries cannot possibly deteriorate. Honorary consuls help precisely the deepening of these links,” Minister Zaharieva said. “Now, more than ever before, the world needs the work of honorary consuls,” she added.

A meeting of all honorary consuls representing Bulgaria around the world will be organised in October on the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Such a forum would help attract investments to Bulgaria and boost contacts with the host countries in all areas.

The dinner was occasioned by the Central and East European Meeting of FICAC, which took place in Sofia between 13 and 15 June 2019. Attending the dinner were FICAC President Mehmet Aykut Eken, Association of Honorary Consuls in Bulgaria President Borislav Boyanov, the Association’s Vice President Maxim Behar, as well as honorary consuls of 35 countries.
