04 April 2019 News

The excellent bilateral dialog, the strategic partnership in a number of spheres, the dynamic relations at all levels in the public administration and the political spectrum, as well as the bilateral ties in the area of international legal cooperation - those were but a few of the topics discussed at a meeting between the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva and the Attorney General of the United States William Barr.

‘Thank you for your support in the course of our transition for carrying through the judicial reform in Bulgaria. We maintain extremely close cooperation with your services, and I thank you for the training seminars that you have been organizing for years for our prosecutors and investigating magistrates. We have implemented numerous joint operations in the fight against drug and human trafficking, currency crimes and money laundering. Thank you also for helping resolve the case of Zhelyaz Andreev,’ the Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister said.

‘We work together splendidly and I hope that we will continue and strengthen even further our cooperation,’ Attorney General Barr pointed out. He also expressed satisfaction with the work of the representatives of his department stationed at the US Embassy in Bulgaria.

During their meeting, the parties also reviewed the bilateral cooperation with respect to security and law enforcement in cyberspace, transboundary access to electronic evidence, transnational organized crime as well as the fight against money laundering.

Minister Zaharieva briefed her host about the steps made by the Bulgarian government to combat crime and corruption, its excellent accomplishments in the fight against smuggling, reforms in the judicial system and the protection of the external border of the EU.

Ekaterina Zaharieva also pointed out that the Bulgarian government will continue to demonstrate a firm political will and resolve for completing the reforms and for the full implementation of all recommendations of the European Commission from January 2017. Results in the judicial system, the fight against corruption and organized crime are there for all to see, and the reforms are irreversible.

William Barr also expressed his high appreciation of the Bulgarian film industry, with which he is familiar as a former member of the board of Time Warner. He shared his willingness to visit Bulgaria within the framework of a future European tour.
