Jubilee post stamp marks 15 years of Bulgarian NATO membership

20 February 2019 News

At a ceremony held in the Council of Ministers building, Minister Zakharieva emphasized the importance of the North Atlantic Alliance for the security and prosperity of Bulgaria, pointing out that since in 2004 this country joined NATO, its GDP has increased three-fold.

‘NATO is more than a military alliance. NATO is, above all, a political alliance, a security alliance, a peace alliance, an alliance of like-minded countries whose only goal is to safeguard their security, peace, democracy and prosperity,’ said Ekaterina Mikhailova.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister also stressed that it was on this day that the National Assembly had ratified the Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on the accession to the Alliance of the Republic of North Macedonia.

‘We have many reasons to be proud and rejoice today, because since 2004, when we became NATO allies, we have been upholding, persistently and continuously, in each consecutive government, the idea that the NATO open-door policy is the best way to achieve peace, prosperity and security in this region,’said Minister Zakharieva.

The cancellation of a jubilee post stamp is part of the National Plan of Initiatives to mark the 15th anniversary of Bulgaria’s NATO membership and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, both of which fall in 2019.  The stamp was designed by Nikolay Mladenov.

Also in attendance at the cancellation ceremony were the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Rossen Zhelyazkov, the CEO of Bulgarian Postal Services, Deyan Daneshki, and Solomon Passy, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs.
