Georg Georgiev: I am proud that Bulgaria has given so much attention to the fight against anti-Semitism and hate speech

21 March 2018 News

"I am proud that the Bulgarian government is investing so much in the fight against global problems such as anti-Semitism, racism, hate speech and intolerance. These are challenges that do not only affect certain segments of our societies but also threaten the human rights situation right across the world".

This is what Deputy Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev maintained at a working breakfast of the national coordinators and state representatives in IHRA, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The meeting took place within the framework of the Sixth Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism (GFCA) held in the State of Israel.

In a talk before his colleagues, Georg Georgiev also pointed out that, by accepting the working definition of anti-Semitism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and the appointment of a national Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism, the Bulgarian government has once again manifested its will and its consistent stance to resist any expression of intolerance or disregard for differences.

"The Bulgarian nation has historically demonstrated its utter intolerance to all forms of hate and discrimination speech," he added.

Katharina von Schnurbein, EC Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism, and Ran Yacobi, chair of the Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism and head of the Israeli IHRA delegation, attended the working breakfast. The attendants discussed the future country initiatives to be implemented in the combat against the language of hatred, racism and intolerance.

Since 2017, Bulgaria has had the status of an IHRA liaison country. This year, our country expects to be granted a full membership.
