Deputy Minister Georgiev talks with the President of the World Jewish Congress in Israel

Deputy Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev spoke with the president of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, yesterday. Georgiev is visiting the State of Israel on the occasion of the Sixth Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism (GFCA) being held there.

"Our country is among the first to adopt a ‘working definition of anti-Semitism’ and to appoint a National Coordinator in the fight against it. I can assure you that Bulgaria and its institutions are dedicated to the fight against hate speech, intolerance and discrimination," the Bulgarian deputy minister said during his meeting with Lauder.

He added he was very happy that the president of the World Jewish Congress attended the ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Bulgarian Jews’s salvation, which took place in the Central Sofia Synagogue on March 10th.

Ronald Lauder congratulated the Bulgarian government and especially Prime Minister Boyko Borissov on his actions, which establish Bulgaria as a sagacious, bold and responsible state, a guarantor of security and stability throughout the region.

"The international Jewish community strongly appreciates the Bulgarian government’s efforts in combating anti-Semitism and the language of hatred. Your prime minister’s visit to Skopje was a remarkable act of solidarity," the president of the World Jewish Congress pointed out.

Apart from Deputy Minister Georgiev, the meeting was also attended by Plamen Bonchev, Director General of the Foreign Ministry’s Global Affairs General Directorate; Dr. Alek Oscar, Chairman of Shalom, the organisation of Bulgarian Jews ; Sofia Cohen, president of the Israelite Spiritual Council; and Nikolay Galabov, president of Negev, Friends of Israel in Bulgaria.

Earlier yesterday, Georg Georgiev took part in a special mission of the World Jewish Congress dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the country’s founding, at which Robert Singer, executive vice president of the organisation, praised Bulgaria as an excellent example of successful cooperation between the government and the local Jewish community in the fight against anti-Semitism.
