On the day of the 145th anniversary of the execution of Vasil Levski a memorial plate was dedicated at the Embassy in Athens, honouring our national hero.

The ceremony was opened by a religious service for the peace of Vasil Ivanov Kunchev in the Bulgarian church St. Reverend John of Rila the Wonderworker and continued in front of the Embassy of Bulgaria. More than 200 of our compatriots –representatives of the cultural societies and Sunday schools in Greece, as well as many Bulgarians from the Greek capital and friends of Bulgaria, were in attendance.

Father Stefan performed the dedication of the plate and blessed those in attendance. Veselin Ivanov, charge d’affaires delivered a welcoming address.

The chairman of the Bulgarian-Greek cultural association announced that the Sunday school of the association will be declared under the auspices of Vasil Levski and bear his name.

Poems about the Apostle of Freedom were recited by students from the Bulgarian Sunday schools in the Greek capital. The guests placed wreaths and flowers before the bas-relief to the tunes of Bulgarian renaissance songs.

The ceremony continued in the overflowing cinema hall of the Embassy, where A Lesson in Patriotism was performed for the youngest guests by the director Iskren Krasimirov (as Christo Botev) and the actor Simeon Vladov (as Vasil Levski).
