“Bulgaria’s active cooperation with the American Jewish community plays an important role for the promotion of Bulgarian-US relations and for deepening the strategic partnership with the US, as well as for the encouragement of practical cooperation between Bulgaria and the State of Israel,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev said at a meeting with American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris.

The Deputy Minister noted that in June 2017 Bulgaria was granted a Liaison Country status in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, becoming the first country to take this step since 2009. He expressed the hope that Bulgaria will become a full member of the Alliance by the end of 2018.

David Harris highlighted the fact that the 75th anniversary of the saving of the Bulgarian Jews during World War II will be marked in 2018. This anniversary offers an excellent opportunity to launch joint initiatives presenting this praiseworthy act of Bulgaria and its people and popularising it with the Jewish communities worldwide. “To me, this is a unique story and the best thing is that it is real. It is worth being seen and heard by more people,” Harris emphasised.

Deputy Minister Georgiev stressed that such joint projects can also be organised within the framework of the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council. “Bulgaria has a lot to be proud of, and we must tell the world about our people’s historic feat,” he stressed.

The two concurred that standing up for shared values like tolerance, humanism and respect for human rights guarantees that disasters like World War II will never happen again.
