18 September 2017 News

Deputy Prime Minister for Judicial Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva took part in a high-level meeting on reforming the United Nationsorganised and chaired by US President Donald Trump in New York.

“For years there has been talk of reforming the UN, but things have finally gotten close at least when it comes to the administrative part. Over 120 countries have signed the declaration in support of the reforms,” Minister Zaharieva noted. “I support the appeal of President Trump and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for less bureaucracy, more efficiency and closeness to the people. The UN's budget has doubled since 2000.”

The meeting was organised at the initiative of the USA. The participants supported a political declaration drafted by a group of countries which have been invited for this purpose by the USA – Canada, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Slovakia, Thailand, Great Britain and Uruguay. These countries have been selected to represent all interested groups in regards to the UN reform which is a positive sign of consensus over the expectations about reforms from the UN Secretary-General.

During the high-level meeting, Zaharieva also conferred with Prime Ministers Edi Rama of Albania and Zoran Zaev of Macedonia, as well as with Foreign Ministers Nikos Kotzias of Greece, Nikola Dimitrov of Macedonia, Teodor Meleșcanu of Romania, Marija Pejčinović Burić of Croatia, and Bert Koenders of The Netherlands.
