Position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the chemical weapons attack in Syria

06 April 2017 News

Bulgaria categorically condemns the use of chemical weapons and chemical substances with equivalent effect as tantamount to a war crime. The barbaric act against the population of the Syrian town of Khan Shaykhun on 4 April 2017 is inadmissible, unacceptable and constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law. This is yet another attack with chemical weapons against the civilian population of Syria. No cause can justify the murder of innocent civilians, including many women and children. We insist that the facts should be confirmed and those responsible for the attack be brought to justice. We recall that the primary responsibility to protect the population of Syria is with the Syrian regime.

The only way to prevent such anti-human acts in future is by immediate cessation of the armed conflict in Syria and finding a political solution.

The Republic of Bulgaria expresses its full support for the work of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for the full and unconditional implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the prevention of the use of this type of mass destruction weapon. We also fully support the UN established international, impartial and independent mechanisms ensuring accountability for the grave violations of international humanitarian law in Syria.
