Position on the information regarding the desecration of a memorial sign at Mount Kajmakcalan

23 September 2016 News

The Bulgarian state has been making continuous efforts to hold joint commemorations of fallen soldiers and to have appropriate designation of their graves. This is an established worldwide practice, honoring the memory of persons who have perished on all sides of military conflicts; it symbolizes reconciliation and the will for peaceful coexistence, and is not related to selfish political, national or religious motives.

For years the authorities in the Republic of Macedonia have been promising to consider the Bulgarian proposals in this direction and for years we are witnessing continuous acts of vandalism: shameful and inexplicable acts from the viewpoint of the universal human values, such as respect for the memory of the dead.

We call upon the authorities of the Republic of Macedonia to dissociate themselves from this act and to prevent other similar disgraceful acts, which, unfortunately, are not isolated cases and are particularly worrying at a time when both sides negotiate the signing of a good- neighbourliness treaty.

MFA will do its utmost, together with other institutions, to restore the memorial.

The person who committed this barbaric act will be banned from entering Bulgaria.
