MFA press release on the situation in the Republic of Turkey as of 20 July, 12 pm

20 July 2016 News

The situation in the Republic of Turkey remains unstable. Series of operations by the Turkish security forces are being conducted on the entire territory of the country and tensions may increase which could generate threats to the physical safety of people. At the same time, public events such as meetings and rallies are held at many places. The level of risk remains high, and clashes are possible at isolated locations.

Given the deteriorating security situation, Bulgarian nationals in Turkey are strongly advised to stay away from busy locations in big cities. It is also recommended to avoid public places in Istanbul with key social role such as Taksim Square, İstiklal Avenue, the area around Dolmabahçe Palace, touristic places in the Fatih district, metro stations in the central parts of Istanbul - areas Fatih, Beyoğlu, Şişli, Beşiktaş, large retail outlets, and areas, related to the events of 15 July, including Atatürk Airport if not necessary.

Identity checks of people and vehicles are introduced at the entrances and exits of Edirne and in the city itself.  Personal documents of the drivers and the vehicles are required and there is potential of delays in the traffic.

The border checkpoints between Bulgaria and Turkey are open and work normally. Traffic to Turkey is busy at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint due to the customary journeys home at this time of the year of Turkish citizens in Western Europe. Control is strengthened at the Turkish side of the border where detailed checks of IDs are conducted.

MFA strongly recommends Bulgarians to refrain from travelling to the Republic of Turkey until things get back to normal. In case of extreme necessity to travel to Turkey please follow the latest developments of the situation in the country and the specific area you plan to visit and register at the Travel Assistant section on the MFA website, leaving address and mobile data.
