Migrant wave and human trafficking top the agenda of meetings of Minister Mitov in New York

26 September 2015 News

Minister Daniel Mitov held meetings with his Turkish counterpart Feridun Sinirlioğlu and with the American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris within the 70th session of the UN General Assembly. Migrant flows, the refugee wave and the fight against human trafficking topped the agenda of the meetings.

Daniel Mitov and Minister Sinirlioğlu agreed on the necessity to take specific steps to address the roots of the problem, i.e. the war in Syria. "We appreciate Turkey's efforts to cope with the refugee problem and curb the influx of large refugee waves in Bulgarian territory," Minister Mitov said. He thanked his counterpart for the cooperation and noted that Turkey’s measures are visible not just for Bulgaria, but for Europe as a whole.

The two chief diplomats discussed possible solutions to the migration problem, including safe zones. "Turkey is a particularly important partner to Bulgaria," said Mitov, expressing hope to continue and deepen the dialogue between the two countries.

Minister Sinirlioğlu underscored the importance of the regional formats for cooperation and greeted Bulgaria for its Chairmanship-in-Office of the South East European Cooperation Process. He voiced support for the deepening of bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest.

Minister Mitov and Bulgarian Ambassador Elena Poptodorova also met with representatives of the American Jewish Committee. The Foreign Minister and American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris discussed human trafficking and stressed the urgent need to increase criminal penalties.
