Daniel Mitov: The ideologies of aggression and intolerance have no place in the 21st century world

17 June 2015 News

The numerous diverse challenges, facing the European Union today, and the options for collective coordinated response were at the focus of the public lecture of Minister Daniel Mitov held on 16 June at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He was invited to deliver a lecture on “EU Foreign Policy:The View from Bulgaria" by the Research Institute for Southeast Europe in the Department of European Studies at LSE.

Today’s security risks are diverse in their origin and nature, but essentially they all represent an attempt to launch and promote socio-political models, alternative to liberal democracy that has gained significant new ground since the end of the Cold War, said Minister Mitov. This requires a clear and decisive response by the EU and the Member States to defend our own values, security and prosperity of European citizens. The ideologies of aggression and intolerance have no place in the world in the 21st century, the Foreign Miniser said.

According to Daniel Mitov, the European course of the Western Balkans is now facing two key challenges. On the one hand, the enlargement fatigue among EU Member States. On the other, the decreasing enthusiasm among the candidate countries to conduct reforms that are necessary for the successful finalization of the process of European integration.

Bulgaria has consistently defended the position that the European Union must keep up the clear membership perspective of the Western Balkans, acknowledging the individual progress of the candidate countries. Those who have the willpower to pursue and implement the reforms necessary for EU accession should be strongly encouraged, pointed out Daniel Mitov.
