Meetings of Minister Daniel Mitov in the Republic of Macedonia

Minister Daniel Mitov and the Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski held a meeting today in Ohrid. The European future of the Republic of Macedonia, resolving the political crisis and the development of the bilateral cooperation topped the agenda of discussions. Both sides agreed on the need to deepen bilateral relations and accelerate efforts to address some open issues. In this regard, Minister Mitov focused on the negotiations on the Treaty of friendship and good-neighborliness and the need for their successful finalization.
They also discussed joint economic and infrastructure projects, focusing on the construction of Corridor 8 and the development of cross-border cooperation. Both sides reaffirmed the need to send positive signals to their citizens.
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia informed the Bulgarian side on the negotiations between the political leaders aimed at finding a way out of the current crisis and voiced hope for resolving it. For his part, Minister Mitov noted that after the last round of negotiations in Brussels, the responsibility for reaching a decision lies with the political leaders in the country and the EU remains strongly committed to the process.
The Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs conferred with the Macedonian opposition leader Zoran Zaev. They discussed the results of the negotiations between the political parties in Brussels on 10 June and the prospects for finding a lasting solution to the political crisis in the Republic of Macedonia. The two agreed on the need for comprehensive reforms in the country, which is in the interests of both the civil society and the process of European integration. SDSM leader expressed firm support for the signing of the Treaty of friendship and good-neighborliness with Bulgaria.
Within the framework of his working visit to the Republic of Macedonia, Minister Daniel Mitov held a meeting with his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Poposki. They discussed the development of bilateral relations and ways for expanding them, including the signing of the Treaty of good-neighborliness in the near future. Minister Mitov extended an invitation to conduct the next round of negotiations on the Treaty in Sofia.
Minister Daniel Mitov reaffirmed Bulgaria’s support for the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the Republic of Macedonia and our readiness to assist the country in its efforts to meet the required criteria and conduct the necessary reforms.
The two ministers discussed the current political crisis in the Republic of Macedonia and the possibilities for its resolution. Minister Mitov stressed the importance of ethnic and civil peace in the Republic of Macedonia, adding that during the rotating SEECP Chairmanship-in-Office Bulgaria will work for the stability and development of the region and the European perspective of its countries.
