Representatives of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) took part in a meeting of the Inter-institutional Coordination Mechanism for the accession of Bulgaria to the Organization

11 April 2023 Events and Discussions

On April 6, 2023, a meeting of the permanent Inter-institutional Coordination Mechanism (ICM) for the accession of Bulgaria to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) took place in the building of the Council of Ministers, with the participation of a delegation from the Directorate for Legal Affairs, which coordinates the accession process on behalf of the OECD.

OECD representatives were on a three-day visit to the country, on the occasion of the presentation of the new Economic Survey of Bulgaria by Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on 4 April. The delegation also took stock of the progress in Bulgaria's accession process to the OECD.

Deputy Minister Velislava Petrova, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the high level of cooperation between Bulgaria and the OECD Secretariat. Our country shares the Organization's values and, as an EU member state, applies its standards to a high degree.

The participants reviewed the progress made in the framework of the ongoing technical reviews conducted by 25 thematic Committees of the OECD. The representatives of the OECD declared their readiness to support Bulgarian institutions and explained the next stages through which our country should go in order to achieve full membership in the Organization. Both the Bulgarian administration and the OECD team responsible for coordination will make efforts for maximum synergy in the implementation of the reforms envisaged under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and those necessary to meet the OECD requirements.

Bulgarian institutions were encouraged to participate actively in the meetings of the OECD working bodies, which will bring the opportunity to draw from the expertise of all Member States and at the same time to share our national views on key topics.

The ultimate objective of implementing and aligning with OECD policies and standards is not simply membership, but a higher living standard for citizens and administration efficiency. Deputy Minister Petrova emphasized Bulgaria's potential to provide added value in the OECD and a specific voice of our region in the development of the best policies and standards for governance in all areas of public, economic and political life.
