Bulgaria’s first participation in a meeting of the Steering Committee of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency as a full member.

16 April 2021 Events and Discussions

On April 15-16, 2021, the regular 141st meeting of the Steering Committee of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) was held online. The Steering Committee is the highest body that makes strategic decisions, monitors and directs the activities of the NEA. Participants in the forum were representatives of the IAEA, Euratom, WANO and other related organisations.

The meeting was opened by OECD’s Secretary-General Angel Guria, who welcomed Bulgaria as the 34th member of the Agency and its Data Bank. The Bulgarian participants were greeted by the General Director of the NEA, William Magood, who praised the professionalism of Bulgarian experts in the pre-accession process. According to him, this professionalism has significantly reduced the time and has contributed to the rapid admission of our country to the Agency. Bulgaria was also welcomed by the President of the meeting (Czech Republic), as well as by participants from other Member States.

The Bulgarian Ambassador to France Nikolay Milkov thanked for the kind words addressed to our country and for the high appreciation of its achievements in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In his speech, he emphasized the importance we attach to our membership in the NEA. The Ambassador reminded of the active cooperation over the years and pointed out that our membership is beneficial for both sides given the experience and expertise in the nuclear field that Bulgaria has. Nikolay Milkov added that nuclear energy occupies almost 1/3 of Bulgaria’s energy mix, noting that nuclear energy is a key element in the transition to a low carbon economy after the pandemic. According to him, achieving carbon neutrality and eliminating the greenhouse effect by 2050 worldwide would be impossible without nuclear energy.

A video about Kozloduy NPP was shown at the meeting.
